Meeting Between IOC and Ukrainian Olympic Committee

A meeting took place in Cortina d'Ampezzo on February 11, 2024, involving representatives of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Ukraine, and Ukrainian skeleton athlete Vladyslav Heraskevych. The central topic was the use of a 'Helmet of Remembrance,' designed to honor Ukrainian athletes who have died as a result of Russia's armed aggression against Ukraine. This dispute highlights the ongoing tension between the IOC's rules on political neutrality and athletes' desire to express solidarity during a time of war.

Vladyslav Heraskevych's Stance

During the meeting, IOC officials stated that the helmet could not be worn during official Olympic competition runs. They proposed alternatives, including the use of a black ribbon during events. The IOC also expressed willingness to allow the helmet to be displayed before and after races, as well as during media interviews in the mixed zone. However, Vladyslav Heraskevych rejected all these proposals, insisting he is prepared to compete only while wearing the 'Helmet of Remembrance.'

The NOC of Ukraine and the Ukrainian national team fully support Vladyslav Heraskevych's position on this matter. The athlete has clearly articulated his stance, emphasizing his readiness to compete exclusively in the memorial helmet. This situation has drawn attention to the importance of honoring fallen athletes and preserving their memory amid ongoing conflict.

This meeting and Heraskevych's firm position underscore not only the individual commitment of the athlete but also a broader national solidarity during a difficult period for Ukraine. Honoring the memory of deceased athletes has become a significant symbol in the struggle for justice and peace. Observing the development of this issue illustrates how sport can become a platform for expressing political and social concerns, and may signal potential shifts in the IOC's approach to supporting athletes from nations under aggression.
