Ukrainian Mother Detained for Attempting to Sell Her Six-Year-Old Son for $25,000

Мати з України затримана через спробу продати свого шестирічного сина за 25 тисяч доларів.

Child Trafficking Incident Foiled

Law enforcement officers in Ukraine's Volyn region have apprehended a 39-year-old woman who attempted to sell her six-year-old son for $25,000. The incident highlights the persistent challenges of human trafficking and child welfare in the region. The mother was detained in March 2026 after she found a potential buyer for the child. The transaction was set to occur on April 17 in Lutsk, but was conducted under police surveillance after the prospective buyer alerted the authorities.

The woman was arrested immediately after receiving the money. She had a prior criminal record for theft. Following a divorce, she had remained living with her youngest son, while her two older children, aged 13 and 16, stayed with their father. The mother reportedly sought to sell the boy because she no longer wished to care for him.

Child's Welfare and Legal Consequences

The boy, who was already known to social services, has been placed under the supervision of child protection authorities and is currently in a shelter. The woman has been formally notified of suspicion under Part 3 of Article 149 of Ukraine's Criminal Code, which pertains to trafficking of a minor. This charge carries a potential penalty of up to 15 years' imprisonment. A court has ordered her to be held in pre-trial detention.

The Office of the Prosecutor General stated that "the woman, who had previously faced criminal charges for theft, remained living with her youngest son after her divorce. Unwilling to continue caring for the child, she decided to sell the boy."

This case has drawn attention to the issues of human trafficking and the social vulnerability of children in Ukraine. It is a stark reminder of the extreme pressures some families face. The swift response by law enforcement prevented a potential tragedy for the child. Authorities have also emphasized the need to strengthen measures for child protection and to support families in difficult circumstances.

This recent case is not an isolated incident, as it echoes another troubling report of a Ukrainian woman arrested for exploiting her children for financial gain. Such occurrences highlight the urgent need for comprehensive measures to address the root causes of child trafficking and protect vulnerable families in the region.
