Charges Filed Against Mykola Tyshchenko

Ukraine's National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) have formally accused lawmaker Mykola Tyshchenko of soliciting an illicit benefit, money laundering, and filing a false asset declaration. These allegations mark a significant development in Ukraine's ongoing anti-corruption efforts, which have drawn increased attention both domestically and from international partners.

Case Details

According to investigators, in August 2023, Tyshchenko—allegedly using the pretext of cracking down on so-called 'call centers'—demanded over $1 million in undue advantages from an individual he believed was linked to those operations. In exchange, he pledged to leverage his official authority to interfere with certain 'call centers' in favor of that individual and to avoid obstructing others. However, he never actually received the illicit payment.

Additionally, Tyshchenko is accused of laundering 12.6 million Ukrainian hryvnias through a sham gift agreement with his former wife. No real transfer of funds occurred, yet the lawmaker reported this sum as income in his annual declaration, thereby submitting false information.

The charges against Mykola Tyshchenko fall under Article 369, Part 4; Article 209, Part 2; and Article 366-2, Part 2 of Ukraine's Criminal Code. The pre-trial investigation remains ongoing. While law enforcement has not officially named the suspect, Oleksiy Honcharenko, a lawmaker from the European Solidarity party, confirmed that the charges were indeed brought against Tyshchenko.

Given Tyshchenko's position as a member of parliament, his case may serve as a warning to other politicians that unlawful actions will not escape scrutiny. It highlights the political will to strengthen anti-corruption institutions in the country, reinforcing accountability among public officials.

In light of these serious allegations, it is worth noting that Tyshchenko's personal life has also been in the spotlight recently. Following his divorce, he publicly referred to himself as a 'free falcon,' which may reflect his current state of mind amidst these legal troubles.
