Sweden to Host Informal NATO Dinner with Ukraine

Швеція проведе неформальну вечерю НАТО за участю українських представників.

Informal Meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council

An informal session of the NATO-Ukraine Council is scheduled for May 21 in Sweden, coinciding with a gathering of Alliance foreign ministers. The event will take place in the Swedish city of Helsingborg on May 21–22, serving as a key forum to address pressing matters of cooperation between Ukraine and NATO.

A reception for participants is set to begin at 5:15 PM local time on May 21, followed by an informal dinner of the NATO-Ukraine Council at Sofiero Palace and Gardens. Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard will host the dinner. The following dignitaries are also expected to attend:

  • King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden
  • Queen Silvia
  • Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson

Subsequent Events

The next day, May 22, short statements are scheduled for 8:00 AM at the media center, with NATO’s Secretary General speaking first. At 10:00 AM, a meeting of the North Atlantic Council at the foreign ministers level will commence, followed by a press conference by the Secretary General at 1:45 PM.

The NATO-Ukraine Council was established after the NATO summit in Vilnius in the summer of 2023. Sweden, which joined NATO in March 2024, has been an active supporter of cooperation with Ukraine. Last June, a meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council took place during the Alliance’s summit in The Hague. Additionally, in May, Ukraine, Sweden, and four other nations launched a multinational defense coalition called the Coalition for Resilient Procurement and Unified Support (PURL), underscoring their commitment to shared security and defense.

This meeting is significant in the context of deepening ties between Ukraine and NATO, especially amid current regional security challenges. Sweden’s involvement as a new Alliance member highlights shifts in the geopolitical landscape and intensified efforts to ensure stability in Europe. The outcomes of the gathering are expected to advance defense strategies and strengthen collaboration among participating nations.

As NATO and Ukraine strengthen their collaboration, it's essential to understand the priorities set for their partnership in the upcoming years. The recent discussions highlight strategic goals that aim to enhance security and defense measures.
