Wild Boar Hunting from a Hide

Wild Boar Hunting from a Hide

Hunting a wild boar is a dangerous activity and requires a lot of strength and nerves. It is a rather dangerous and cautious beast that inhabits many regions of our country. There are various ways to hunt it, including from a hide.

The optimal time of year for hunting boars in this way is autumn. During this period, one can still find unharvested oats or other cereal crops in the fields. The movement to feeding areas always follows the same paths, and the resting places of the boar remain unchanged. As cover, the animal prefers reed thickets, swamps with bulrushes, and spruce forests. However, the most promising for hunting from a hide are the oat fields, where one can observe the feeding of the boar.

Preparing the Hide

The hide for hunting boars can be built not only in places where they feed but also where their paths cross or near their daytime resting spots. Before building, one must decide exactly where it will be located and take into account the wind direction, as although the boar has quite poor eyesight, it has an excellent sense of smell. If it detects a suspicious scent, it may leave the resting area.

For constructing the hide, it is best to use several trees that are close to each other. Since the shelter will be elevated, a ladder needs to be constructed. A few steps are created and secured on the trees. After that, a seat made of boards is placed at a certain height. To ensure that bushes or small trees do not obstruct the view of the boar, they can be trimmed.

It is advisable to arrive at the hunting site a few hours before sunset, and one must always consider the wind direction. After this, the hunter settles into the hide, where they will wait for the arrival of the boar. It is also essential to eliminate all foreign scents, so one should not use deodorants before hunting, and during the wait, it is prohibited to consume alcohol or smoke.

One can recognize that a herd of boars is approaching the hunting spot by characteristic sounds – the cracking of branches and rustling. Before entering the feeding area, the boars will check for danger, sniffing the air for a while. If nothing alarms them, the herd will enter the clearing. It is at this moment that one must determine the target and take the shot.

If a young boar is the target, it is advisable to use buckshot up to 9 mm. For older boars, it is better to use bullets. Aim for the shoulder area for a higher chance of hitting the heart. It is not recommended to approach a fallen boar closely, as it can pose a danger to the hunter's health. It is best to finish off the animal with a shot to the ear area.
