The NBU is considering the possibility of transitioning to the euro as the base currency
The National Bank of Ukraine is actively considering the possibility of transitioning the country to the euro as the base currency for exchange rate formation. This was stated by the First Deputy Head of the NBU, Serhiy Nikolaichuk, emphasizing that for now, the US dollar remains the main benchmark.
'We are actively studying the issue, but I cannot say that we have a clear plan that tomorrow or by the end of the year we plan to change the currency for exchange rate formation. The exchange rate currency should be one – for now, it is the dollar,' Nikolaichuk noted.
According to Nikolaichuk, changes in the future are necessary, particularly due to the processes of European integration. The National Bank is already undertaking certain measures in this direction, including publishing indicators in euros alongside the dollar and increasing the volume of euro assets in international reserves.
'Since the funds accumulated by the government in euro accounts are also included in the international reserves,' Nikolaichuk emphasized.
