Fundraising Campaign for Vinnytsia Buses
Amid a political scandal that threatened the transfer of vehicles from the Polish city of Kielce, the Polish foundation Sikorki na Ukrainie launched a fundraising effort to purchase buses for Vinnytsia. As of June 15, activists had collected 518,210 zloty—approximately 6.3 million hryvnias—surpassing the initial goal of 500,000 zloty. The plan is to buy 15 buses and hand them over to Vinnytsia. Should acquiring the vehicles in Poland prove impossible, the organizers will look for buses within Ukraine instead.
Political Turmoil and Its Consequences
The fundraiser was conducted on the Zrzutka platform, which published the results. However, the situation grew complicated due to political debates in Poland, particularly demands from Law and Justice party deputies to rename a street named after Stepan Bandera in Vinnytsia. The mayor of Kielce stated that Vinnytsia had withdrawn its request for the transfer of used buses, a direct outcome of these discussions. A resolution to rename the street failed to garner enough support, reflecting a hostile environment for delivering aid.
One of the campaign organizers remarked: 'For local politicians, the noise around this aid is a free opportunity to score points in polls. For us, it’s the real cost of proving that genuine solidarity still exists.'
Vinnytsia Mayor Serhiy Morhunov also commented on the situation, which has sparked public debate. Despite these political obstacles, the Sikorki na Ukrainie foundation continues its efforts to support Vinnytsia.
