Estonian President’s Statement
At the Lennart Meri Conference in Tallinn, Estonian President Alar Karis declared that pressure on Russia must not be eased, stressing that the Kremlin should receive no concessions—not even symbolic ones. He emphasized that Russia must not be given any 'lifebuoys' or 'rays of hope' that its aggression might eventually pay off.
Karis supported raising Estonia’s defense spending to 5% of GDP. He called for these funds to be directed toward developing key defense sectors, including:
- air defense systems
- long-range weapons
- ammunition production
- intelligence
- drones
- overall defense industry development
In his view, this is a necessary step given the current threats.
Calls for Action
Karis also urged the European Union to accelerate accession negotiations with Ukraine and other candidate countries, highlighting the importance of transatlantic unity. Two days before his speech, Estonia called for increased pressure on Russia following a massive strike on Ukraine. Estonia’s intelligence agency has warned that Russia could restore its combat capability and be ready for a major war again within the next few years.
“Europe has courage. It needs to be allowed to show it,” Karis stated.
The Estonian president’s address reflects growing security concerns in the region and the need to strengthen defense capabilities not only in Estonia but across Europe. Amid ongoing Russian aggression and its potential plans, calls to bolster defense and support Ukraine are becoming increasingly urgent. This signals Estonia’s ambition to play an active role in shaping collective security in Europe, especially in a shifting geopolitical landscape.
In light of the recent developments, Estonia's position is increasingly relevant, particularly after the revelations regarding Russia's intentions following the strike on Kyiv. This highlights the urgency for European nations to unite and enhance their defensive strategies in response to escalating threats.
