The Professor's Deliberate Hoax
Ihor Serdiuk, a professor at the Kyiv School of Economics, deliberately submitted a hoax article to a scientific journal to test its peer-review system. The paper, which was generated in about 30 minutes using ChatGPT, focused on a completely fictional island nation called Murinoa. Shockingly, the journal accepted the article for publication in just seven minutes, accompanied by a request for a publication fee of 1,200 Ukrainian hryvnias (approximately $30 USD). This experiment highlights a growing concern about the integrity of academic publishing, where 'pay-to-publish' models can sometimes prioritize fees over rigorous review.
Professor Serdiuk's fabricated study was published in the journal 'National Interests of Ukraine,' listing a fictitious master of history, Vasyl Sokalienko, as the author. The paper was submitted on February 27. The journal is part of the 'Scientific Perspectives' publishing group, which oversees about ten academic titles. Publications in these journals can be counted toward dissertation defenses in Ukraine, lending the incident significant weight within the country's academic system.
Revelations and Repercussions
The English abstract of the paper explicitly stated that Murinoa was a fictional country, and the author's affiliation was given as a non-existent history museum in Volyn. Following the exposure of the experiment, the publishing group decided to retract the article. The first issue of the journal for 2026 contained 128 articles, each costing roughly 1,200 hryvnias to publish. The 'Scientific Perspectives' group is headed by PhD holder Iryna Zhukova. Notable figures who have published in the group's journals include:
- Member of Parliament David Arakhamia,
- Ukraine's Ambassador to the UK, Valeriy Zaluzhnyi,
- Major General Oleksandr Pivnenko,
- and Kateryna Usyk.
This case underscores the critical need for a robust peer-review process in scientific publishing and calls into question the quality of materials that can find their way into serious academic venues.
This incident demonstrated how quickly and without proper scrutiny articles can be published in scientific journals, jeopardizing trust in academic publications.
It also emphasizes the necessity of improving review systems to prevent similar incidents in the future, especially when academic reputation and research quality play a critically important role in the advancement of science.
