Zhurova's Proposal
Russian State Duma deputy Svetlana Zhurova has suggested that Russia and Finland could co-host a future Olympic Games. Zhurova stated that Russia is always prepared to host Olympic events and believes partnering with other nations could be an effective solution. She specifically highlighted this as an interesting option for a Winter Olympics, noting that Finland alone might find it difficult to stage the Games.
Svetlana Zhurova, an Olympic speed skating champion, declared:
“Our country is always ready to host a summer or winter Olympics. Kazan or Moscow could host a Summer Olympics tomorrow. Sochi and St. Petersburg are also capable of hosting an Olympics. Just say the word, and we'll organize everything tomorrow.”
She added that, despite already scheduled Games, Russia could potentially bid to host an Olympics starting from 2038 if the need arises.
Sports Cooperation and International Standing
Zhurova emphasized the importance of countries uniting to host major sporting events, remarking: “I, for example, am convinced that Russia could unite with Finland to host the Games – St. Petersburg and Helsinki.” This initiative comes as Russia seeks to regain influence in international sports. The proposal emerges against a backdrop of Russia's suspension from many global sporting federations following its invasion of Ukraine.
In a related context, on February 29, 2024, neutral Russian speed skater Alexandra Sayutina attended Vladimir Putin's annual address to the Federal Assembly. She was present alongside Putin's allies and Russian military personnel who have participated in the war against Ukraine. Russian skier Veronika Stepanova posted a photo on Instagram confirming Sayutina's attendance at the event.
Svetlana Zhurova's proposal for Russia-Finland cooperation in organizing the Olympics reflects Russia's ambition to restore its status within the international sports community after a series of sanctions and restrictions linked to political events. This move could be an attempt to strengthen sporting ties with other nations despite the complex political situation. Such initiatives are likely to face intense scrutiny from international sports bodies, given the current geopolitical circumstances.
