Frontline Situation in Ukraine Deteriorates

On May 20, 2026, Viktor Yagun, a retired SBU Major General and former Deputy Head of the Security Service of Ukraine, warned that the situation on the Ukrainian front is worsening. He highlighted growing tensions across multiple fronts, including the energy-sanctions war against Russia, as well as the broader global security standoff involving Iran, China, and NATO. The heaviest Russian military pressure remains concentrated near Pokrovsk, Kostiantynivka, and Sloviansk, with 189 combat engagements recorded—underscoring the high intensity of ongoing hostilities.

Risks Facing Ukraine

In his statement, Yagun emphasized that the threat to Ukraine goes beyond direct frontal assaults. A significant concern is the potential infiltration of small enemy units due to manpower shortages in Ukrainian defensive lines. He also pointed out that ongoing disputes over mobilization policies and military command structures pose serious reputational and socio-psychological risks, which Russia could exploit to undermine public confidence in the draft.

Additionally, Yagun drew attention to joint Russian-Belarusian nuclear drills held from May 19 to 21, involving approximately 64,000 troops. He described these exercises as an act of nuclear blackmail and psychological coercion aimed at both NATO and Ukraine.

As a result, Ukraine remains in a highly volatile state, with recent developments signaling that the conflict’s escalation could have serious consequences for both the country’s internal security and the broader global security landscape. The intensification of fighting on the front lines, combined with Russia’s heightened military exercises alongside Belarus, calls for vigilant attention from the international community. These dynamics could directly impact European stability and NATO’s security posture.

Ukraine’s mobilization efforts and military governance also remain under scrutiny, as their effective management may prove decisive in countering external threats.

As the situation intensifies on the Ukrainian front, concerns are also rising regarding potential threats from Belarus and ongoing Russian military drills.
