Loss of opportunity for Russian bobsledders

Russian bobsledders lost the opportunity to qualify for the Olympic tournament in bobsled in Italy, which will take place in February 2024, due to the decision of the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF). This was the result of their performances at the World Cup events in St. Moritz and the North American Cup in Lake Placid, where the athletes from Russia failed to secure spots for the Olympics-2026.

Restrictions for Russian athletes

Currently, Russian female athletes can only compete in IBSF tournaments in women's monobob competitions. Meanwhile, in the women's Olympic tournament in monobob, athletes from no more than 17 countries can participate, which also limits the opportunities for Russian athletes. In addition, Russian skeleton athletes also lost their chances to participate in the 2026 Olympic Games.

The issues faced by Russian female athletes in the context of Olympic qualification increased after Alexandra Sayutina's participation in a propaganda event that took place on February 29, 2024. She was present at Vladimir Putin's annual address to the Federal Assembly. This caused public outrage, as participation in such events is a serious violation of the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) recommendations regarding neutral athletes. Veronika Stepanova posted a photo confirming Sayutina's presence at this event, highlighting the seriousness of the situation for Russian sports on the international stage.

The loss of opportunity for Russian bobsledders and skeleton athletes to compete in the Olympic Games is part of a broader context of restrictions placed on Russian sports due to political and ethical circumstances. During international competitions, athletes must adhere to a neutral status, and any actions that contradict these requirements may lead to further sanctions against athletes and their countries. This underscores the importance of following the IOC's recommendations to maintain fair play and equality in the sporting environment.
