Russian skeleton athletes lost their chance for the 2026 Olympics: due to lack of points in the ranking

Українські скелетоністи змагатимуться за участь у Олімпіаді 2026 року, тоді як російські атлети залишилися без шансів через низькі результати в таблиці рейтингів.

Lack of opportunity for Russian skeleton athletes

Russians have lost the opportunity to qualify for the men's Olympic skeleton tournament in Italy in February 2026 due to a lack of points in the world ranking. The 2026 Olympics will take place in Italy from February 6 to 22, and quotas for participation are distributed according to the ranking of the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) as of January 18. At the moment, Russian skeleton athletes have not been able to accumulate the required number of points to participate in the competitions.

Competition and neutral status

Athletes from 15 countries managed to score over 360 points at the World Cup stage on January 7 in St. Moritz, confirming the high level of competition. At the same time, winning at the European Cup stage costs 120 points, which is also an important factor in forming the ranking. Unfortunately, Russian athletes, such as Daniil Romanov, Vladislav Semenov, and Yeremiy Zikov, who have neutral status, could not achieve the necessary results.

Russian skeleton athletes last competed in international competitions in February 2022 at the Beijing Olympic Games. In mid-December, seven Russian skeleton athletes received neutral statuses, but this did not help them in earning points for participation in the upcoming Olympics. Notable athletes with neutral status include:

  • Victoria Fettel
  • Olena Frolova
  • Polina Knyazeva
  • Polina Tyurina
  • Daniil Romanov
  • Vladislav Semenov
  • Yeremiy Zikov

Thus, the lack of points in the world ranking will prevent Russian skeleton athletes from participating in important competitions, which is a significant loss for the team.

The loss of the opportunity to compete at the Olympics is not only a sporting loss but also symbolic for Russian athletes who are trying to return to the international arena after being sidelined.

Having a neutral status did not provide them with the necessary support to achieve competitive results. This highlights the challenges facing athletes and the importance of international competitions for restoring reputation and participation in the global sports context.
