Russia's Hockey Team Barred from 2026 Olympic Games
The Russian men's hockey team will not compete at the 2026 Olympic Winter Games. Vyacheslav Fetisov, a three-time Stanley Cup champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist, reacted to the news by calling the decision a betrayal. He stated he has no interest in a tournament from which Russia was expelled for what he considers fabricated reasons.
'I consider it a betrayal to watch hockey where we are not present for contrived reasons. This entire situation holds no interest for me,' – Vyacheslav Fetisov.
The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) suspended Russian athletes from its tournaments in March 2022. The 2026 Olympics will be the first in 12 years to feature NHL players. France's men's team, which last competed at the Olympics in 2002, will take Russia's place in the tournament. The men's Olympic hockey competition is scheduled for February 11–22 in Milan.

- biathlon
- alpine skiing

The ban on Russian hockey players is part of a broader policy by international sports bodies to isolate Russia following its invasion of Ukraine. This move has drawn criticism from Russian athletes and supporters who view it as politically motivated. Meanwhile, Ukraine's participation in a wide range of sports underscores its commitment to international athletic competition and supporting its athletes on the global stage. The contrasting fates of the two nations' teams highlight how geopolitical events continue to shape the world of international sport.
