Get Married Online with a Sign Language Interpreter
The Diia app has introduced a new feature allowing couples to marry online with the support of a sign language interpreter. This service is specifically designed to assist individuals with hearing and/or speech impairments. The Ministry of Digital Transformation announced the launch on their official Facebook page. Previously, many online wedding ceremonies had to be postponed due to the absence of an interpreter, requiring couples to resubmit their applications. Now, the digital civil registry office arranges a free video link interpreter for the ceremony, making the process smoother and more inclusive.
To use this service, applicants must indicate their need for interpretation and specify any hearing or speech-related conditions when submitting their marriage application. The interpreter’s involvement is provided at no charge, aiming to make marriage registration more accessible to everyone. This initiative was developed collaboratively by the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Digital Transformation, with support from Switzerland under the EGAP Program, implemented by the East Europe Foundation.
Online Divorce Service Already Available
Diia previously enabled couples to dissolve their marriage online. In June 2026, the Ministry of Justice announced the beta launch of the online divorce service within the app. This option is open to spouses who mutually agree to divorce and have no minor children together. Additionally, the Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers extended the experimental online marriage registration project through Diia for two more years, effective from August 15, 2026.
“An important day should be about love, not logistical challenges. That’s why we’re making online marriage even more accessible,” the app developers stated.
Introducing sign language interpreter support for online weddings marks a significant advance in ensuring equal access to government services for people with disabilities. This feature eliminates previous barriers and delays caused by the need for in-person interpreters. Such progressive steps demonstrate the government’s commitment to accommodating diverse needs and simplifying administrative procedures for all Ukrainian citizens.
In addition to facilitating online marriages, the Diia app has also introduced measures for specific demographics. For instance, widows and widowers can now legally marry online, thanks to recent government reforms. This further enhances accessibility and inclusivity within the digital civil registry, ensuring that more individuals can celebrate their unions without unnecessary barriers.
