Russian troops struck at Ukraine's gas infrastructure on October 3, which led to the destruction of about 60% of the country's gas production capacity, according to Bloomberg. As a result, Ukraine has already spent 2 billion euros on gas imports for the winter period.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized that Russia is actively obstructing gas extraction in Ukraine and urged for funding to purchase fuel for the winter. The country's government has already reached out to partners from the G7 for support in repairing the energy system and providing financial aid.
Naftogaz received loans from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development of 500 million euros and from the European Investment Bank of 300 million euros to cover urgent costs. Energy Minister Svitlana Hrynchuk emphasized that the actual volume of gas needed for Ukraine will depend on the speed of restoring damaged facilities and the likelihood of future attacks.
The conflict in eastern Ukraine continues to have a serious impact on the country's energy system, necessitating immediate measures to ensure gas supply for the winter and to protect energy facilities from further attacks. The Ukrainian government is seeking help from global partners and is actively working to restore its gas infrastructure.
