Oleksandra Parkhomenko's Historic World Championship Win
Ukrainian athlete Oleksandra Parkhomenko has secured a historic first for her nation by winning the World Masters Ski Orienteering Championships, claiming three gold medals. The event was held in Bulgaria in late January, where a lack of snow forced organizers to relocate the competition's courses 1000 meters higher into the Rila National Park mountain range. The three-day championships took place at altitudes exceeding 1700 meters above sea level. Ski orienteering combines cross-country skiing with precise navigation using a map and compass.
Victory in the 35+ Age Category
Parkhomenko earned her three gold medals in the women's 35+ age division. The championships also featured competitors in the 65, 70, 75, 80, and 85-year-old categories. Ukraine was further represented by two other athletes in the M65 category:
- Viacheslav Parkhomenko - 7th place in the middle distance and sprint events
- Dmytro Horelyi - 12th place in the long-distance event
Oleksandra Parkhomenko's triumph marks a significant milestone for Ukrainian sport and for the history of ski orienteering in the country.
This achievement highlights the growing popularity of orienteering sports in Ukraine and could serve as an impetus for the further development of the discipline nationwide.
