Accusation against Ukrainian coach at the European Cup in skeleton

The International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) has accused Ukrainian coach Dmytro Tkachenko of violating the code of conduct during the European Cup in skeleton held in Innsbruck. This accusation stemmed from the demonstration of political posters calling for an end to the war in Ukraine.

The anti-war action in Ukraine took place on January 8, when representatives of the Ukrainian, Swedish, and Latvian skeleton teams stepped out in support of peace. It is important to note that the participation of Russian athletes in the competitions occurred on January 9 and 10. The last performance of Russian skeleton athletes in international competitions took place in February 2022 at the Olympic Games in Beijing.

Response to the accusation

Representatives of the IBSF expressed their outrage, stating:

“Unfortunately, we have learned that your coach Dmytro Tkachenko and his team violated the IBSF Code of Conduct.”

The response to the accusations was also voiced by Mykhailo Geraskevych, who commented: “What a disgrace from IBSF.” This situation has raised concerns and discussions in the sports community regarding political actions at international competitions.

This event highlights the complex interplay between sports and politics, especially in the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine. The calls for peace and support for Ukraine are taking place on international arenas, provoking ambiguous reactions from sports organizations. This may lead to further debates about the acceptability of political actions during sporting events and their impact on the participation of athletes from countries in conflict.
