Ukrainian Politicians Return State Decorations

Victor Yushchenko, Ukraine’s third president, has turned down the Polish Order of the White Eagle after Polish President Karol Nawrocki decided to revoke the same award from Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Nawrocki’s decision, made on June 19, stemmed from the naming of a Ukrainian military unit after the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). Yushchenko’s refusal is part of a broader backlash among Ukrainian political figures against this move. This dispute highlights ongoing tensions between Kyiv and Warsaw over historical narratives.

  • Former Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma is among other politicians who have also declined Polish honors.
  • Andriy Sybiha, Vasyl Bodnar, and Kyrylo Budanov have likewise announced they are returning their awards.

In contrast, Petro Poroshenko has chosen to keep his Order of the White Eagle. Vyacheslav Abroskin, a former first deputy head of the National Police of Ukraine, spoke out against the wave of award returns, stressing the importance of maintaining Ukraine-Poland relations amid the current war.

Zelenskyy’s Response

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, for his part, mailed his order back to Karol Nawrocki on June 20. Commenting on the Polish president’s actions, Iryna Vannikova stated:

“This award was given not only to a specific individual. Above all, it was a gesture of respect for the Ukrainian people, who are paying an extraordinarily high price for their freedom, independence, and right to live in their own state.” - Iryna Vannikova

She added that “any steps that weaken Ukrainian-Polish unity ultimately serve only the Kremlin’s interests.”

The situation surrounding the Order of the White Eagle underscores the complex relationship between Ukraine and Poland, particularly regarding historical issues. The refusal of Ukrainian politicians to accept Polish awards signals growing strain in bilateral ties, which could affect cooperation on critical security and support matters. Historical memory and mutual respect remain key factors shaping Ukraine-Poland relations, especially relevant amid today’s challenges.

The recent decision by Polish President Karol Nawrocki to revoke Zelenskyy's honor has sparked significant reactions among Ukrainian leaders. This development not only reflects the ongoing tensions between Ukraine and Poland but also raises questions about the future of their diplomatic ties.
