Discussions underway to improve road safety through new measures
The Ukrainian government has reviewed draft proposals aimed at enhancing road safety. Among the key ideas are introducing a tiered system of fines for speeding, imposing stricter penalties on repeat offenders, and expanding the network of automated traffic cameras. Another major topic of discussion was the need for legal regulations governing the use of electric scooters.
Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko and Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko attended the meeting where these issues were examined. According to Svyrydenko,
“I expect the Ministry of Internal Affairs to discuss these proposals with members of Parliament in the near future.”Planned measures include fines that increase based on how much a driver exceeds the speed limit, as well as harsher consequences for those who habitually break traffic rules.
Violation statistics and road safety challenges
Over the past 12 months, automatic speed cameras have recorded nearly 2,900 drivers who exceeded the limit more than 50 times. More than 35,000 drivers were caught speeding over ten times in a year, and almost 12,500 were flagged more than twenty times. Currently, around 377 cameras are in operation across the country, but authorities plan to increase that number to over 410 units.
“Where enforcement is active, drivers are more likely to follow the rules,”Svyrydenko noted.
Special attention was also given to the safety of road users who ride electric scooters.
“We are also preparing legal regulations for the use of e-scooters and other light personal vehicles. The number of accidents involving them rose by 66.8% in the first five months of 2026. People are being killed and injured, including children. The rules must be clear and understandable for all road users,”
the Prime Minister emphasized.These initiatives represent important steps toward improving road safety in Ukraine, especially given the growing number of participants such as e-scooter riders. In light of the accident statistics linked to these vehicles, legal regulation could help reduce risks and establish clear guidelines for everyone on the road. Expanding the camera network and introducing graduated fines may also serve as effective tools to deter traffic violations.
In light of the proposed tiered fines for speeding violations, the government is also considering measures such as suspending licenses for repeat offenders. This approach aims to tackle the ongoing issue of traffic violations more effectively, ensuring that habitual offenders face significant repercussions for their actions on the road.
