How Intense Light After Dark Affects Eye Health

A major study drawing on data from 82,826 participants in the UK Biobank has revealed that exposure to bright light exceeding 1,000 lux between 8:00 PM and 11:30 PM significantly raises the likelihood of developing serious eye conditions. Specifically, the risk of age-related macular degeneration climbs by 31%, cataracts by 18%, and primary open-angle glaucoma by 47%. These findings were published in the scientific journal GeroScience.

Study Methodology

At the start of the project, all participants had healthy vision. Over the course of one week, they wore wrist devices that recorded light levels every 1.2 seconds. Researchers then tracked their health for nearly eight years. The analysis identified a threshold of vulnerability: any evening light intensity above 1,000 lux. In contrast, a typical room lamp emitting between 100 and 500 lux is considered safe.

These results underscore the need to manage evening lighting levels, as prolonged exposure to bright light can have serious consequences for eyesight. The study opens new avenues for exploring how artificial lighting affects ocular health and could inform guidelines to limit the use of intense light sources in the evening.

The research highlights growing concerns about artificial light's impact on human health—particularly vision—given the increasing use of electronic devices and lighting in homes and workplaces. It is essential that medical professionals and lighting engineers take these findings into account when developing recommendations and standards that not only ensure comfort but also protect public eye health.
