Virgin Trains Wins Track Access Under the English Channel

Richard Branson’s Virgin Trains has been cleared by the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) to use the rail lines running through the Channel Tunnel. From 1 October 2030, the operator will be able to run up to 20 daily departures linking London with Paris, Brussels, and Amsterdam. The access agreement, now in force, extends to 31 December 2040 and sets up a direct challenge to Eurostar, which has held the sole route since the tunnel first opened in 1994.

The company plans to run services between London’s St Pancras International and the Eurostar terminals in Paris, Brussels, and Amsterdam. Last October, it also secured shared access to Eurostar’s Temple Mills depot in east London, the only maintenance facility connected to the High Speed 1 line, which runs from London to the tunnel.

Passenger Opportunities and Industry Reaction

The ORR called the track-access ruling an important step forward for cross-channel rail, but warned that “there is still a great deal of work to do.”

Sir Richard Branson: “It’s time to end this 30-year monopoly and introduce a touch of Virgin magic to the Channel route.”

For travellers, the decision creates new alternatives for journeys to mainland Europe. Uber has separately announced intentions to launch its own London-to-Europe train service in 2029.

The arrival of Virgin Trains could reshape the passenger rail market between Britain and continental Europe, potentially lowering fares and improving quality. More competition may also spur innovation, with riders ultimately standing to benefit. All eyes will now be on Virgin’s next moves and on how Eurostar responds to the changing landscape.

The recent decision by Virgin Trains to enter the Channel Tunnel market raises intriguing possibilities for future rail travel. In light of this development, there are also discussions about a potential direct night train service connecting Scotland to Europe, which could further enhance cross-border travel options. As competition increases, it is essential to consider how these changes might affect overall connectivity and passenger experience.
