Trial of Oleh Lomaka
A resident of the Volyn region, Oleh Lomaka, has been sentenced to eight years in prison for treason by the Lutsk City District Court. According to court documents, Lomaka collaborated with Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) while living in Poland, where he gathered intelligence on the country’s industrial and defense infrastructure. He was recruited in March 2025.
While operating in Poland, the convicted individual recorded data on specific facilities, including:
- a chemical plant
- an electromechanical enterprise
Both facilities are located in the city of Bydgoszcz. The collected information was deemed strategically valuable to hostile intelligence agencies. The court ruled his actions criminal and imposed a sentence of eight years in prison.
Appeal Possible
Under the court’s decision, the verdict can be appealed, allowing for a potential review of the case by a higher court. As a result, Lomaka’s case remains open to further legal proceedings.
This ruling underscores the severity of treason-related offenses, particularly given the current geopolitical climate.
Collaboration with foreign intelligence services that threatens national security will continue to draw scrutiny from law enforcement and the judiciary in Ukraine. It is also worth noting that the possibility of an appeal indicates the case may still evolve, potentially shaping public perception and the response of state institutions.
The sentencing of Oleh Lomaka highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Ukraine in safeguarding its national security.
