Vladyslav Heraskevych Awarded the Order of Liberty

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has presented the Order of Liberty to skeleton athlete Vladyslav Heraskevych, following the athlete's disqualification from the 2026 Winter Olympics. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) disqualified Heraskevych for competing with a helmet featuring a collage of Ukrainian athletes who were killed on the front lines or by Russian shelling. The IOC cited its Rule 50, which prohibits political, racial, or religious propaganda at Olympic venues and on equipment. This incident highlights the ongoing tension between the IOC's neutrality rules and expressions of national mourning during Russia's war in Ukraine.

President Zelenskyy's Statement

President Zelenskyy stated that 660 Ukrainian athletes and coaches have been killed since Russia's full-scale invasion began. He also noted that 13 Russian athletes participating in the Games under a neutral status have, outside of competition venues, expressed support for the aggression and occupation.

'Sport does not mean forgetfulness, and the Olympic movement should help stop wars, not appease an aggressor. Unfortunately, the International Olympic Committee's decision to disqualify Ukrainian skeleton athlete Vladyslav Heraskevych says otherwise. This is certainly not about the principles of Olympism, which are founded on fairness and the promotion of peace.' Volodymyr Zelenskyy

The decision to award Heraskevych the Order of Liberty serves as a symbol of support for Ukrainian sport and a tribute to fallen athletes, despite rulings from international sporting bodies. This situation underscores the complex interplay between sports and politics, particularly in the context of war. The award to Heraskevych, despite his disqualification, demonstrates that the Ukrainian community continues to honor its heroes who stand for their country, even when facing international sanctions. Simultaneously, the IOC's ruling is likely to fuel further debate about the role of sport in highlighting socio-political conflicts and the ethics of competition.
