Zelenskyy-Putin Encounter Proposed at G7 Summit
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine had proposed a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin during the G7 summit in France. The encounter was planned to take place in the presence of leaders from the United States and the European Union. He made this statement near the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery, which had been damaged by an overnight Russian strike.
The G7 summit began on June 15 in Évian-les-Bains, France, and runs through June 17. Ukraine submitted a request for a meeting with Putin, and the United States agreed to extend an invitation to him. The meeting was scheduled to start later on Monday. However, according to Zelenskyy, Russia did not align with the unified Western position and remains unwilling to engage in dialogue.
Zelenskyy emphasized: 'We made it clear that we are ready to meet with Putin during the G7 summit because Trump and Macron will be there—meaning Europeans plus Americans. This is a good, I think a very good opportunity for everyone to meet together.'
He added, 'Europe and the United States reached an agreement, but Russia once again demonstrated that it is not ready for dialogue.'
Key Topics of the G7 Summit
Among the key issues under discussion at the summit are:
- support for Ukraine
- ending the war
- the situation regarding Iran
- the opening of the Strait of Hormuz
French President Emmanuel Macron opened the summit. Zelenskyy and Donald Trump are expected to participate in a G7 working session and may hold informal talks on the sidelines.
Zelenskyy’s statement about readiness to meet Putin at the G7 highlights Ukraine’s efforts to rally international support in resolving the conflict with Russia. With the war ongoing and infrastructure damage—such as that at the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra—the importance of global dialogue becomes even more pressing. Russia’s refusal to engage in talks underscores the deep divisions between the West and Moscow, which could shape future developments in the region.
As the G7 summit unfolds, discussions intensify not only around Ukraine's ongoing conflict but also about the diplomatic engagements between key world leaders. In this context, the upcoming dinner between Trump and Macron in Versailles is poised to set the stage for significant dialogues that could influence the outcome of Zelenskyy's proposed meeting with Putin.
