Andrii Levus Takes Parliamentary Oath
According to Главком: On June 12, Andrii Levus was sworn in as a member of parliament and officially joined the European Solidarity party. He fills the seat left vacant by Stepan Kubiv, who passed away on May 18. Levus was registered as a people's deputy on June 11, allowing him to assume the vacant position in the Verkhovna Rada.
Background and Political Career
Born on August 9, 1979, in the city of Stryi, Lviv region, Levus graduated from Ivan Franko National University of Lviv in 2002 with a degree in history. After completing his higher education, he worked as a teacher of history and law at a secondary school. In 2004, he managed the local campaign headquarters for Viktor Yushchenko during the presidential election and later led the local branch of the People's Union Our Ukraine party.
From 2007 to 2012, Levus served as a paid assistant to lawmaker Andrii Parubiy. In 2012, he managed the parliamentary campaign of candidate Valentyn Nalyvaichenko in the Zboriv district of Ternopil region. He was a co-founder of the civic initiative 'Country Renewal' and the 'Resistance' civic movement. During 2013-2014, he served as head of the Maidan self-defense command post and co-founded the NGO 'All-Ukrainian Network Free People'.
In 2014, Levus became deputy head of the Security Service of Ukraine under Valentyn Nalyvaichenko and was elected as an independent MP for the 8th convocation of the Verkhovna Rada from the People's Front party. He later chaired the subcommittee on state security within the Parliamentary Committee on National Security and Defense and was a member of the People's Front party's Military Council. In 2017, he founded the NGO 'Realists', and in 2018, he was placed on Russia's sanctions list.
In 2019, Levus ran unsuccessfully for the 9th convocation of parliament as a candidate for European Solidarity. In 2020, the High Anti-Corruption Court set bail of over half a million hryvnias for Levus on suspicion of illegally receiving budget compensation for housing while serving as an MP in the 8th convocation. Investigators claimed he already owned a residence within 30 kilometers of Kyiv. However, in 2021, the High Anti-Corruption Court acquitted him, though the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office appealed the verdict.
Levus continues his active political engagement, now taking on a new role in the Verkhovna Rada.
His entry into parliament marks a shift in representation following the death of his predecessor. With his prior experience in politics and involvement in civic movements, Levus is expected to focus on national security and defense issues. Having held senior positions before, his appointment is seen as a continuation of European Solidarity's political direction.
Following his appointment, Levus's entry into the parliament coincides with the recent decisions made by the Central Election Commission, which has been actively reshaping the legislative landscape by introducing new members. This shift marks a significant moment in Ukrainian politics as the parliament adapts to recent changes.
