According to Главком: Andriy Parubiy was killed in a targeted shooting on a street in Lviv on August 30, 2025. The Lviv Regional Prosecutor's Office has launched a pre-trial investigation into the deliberate murder. According to law enforcement, police have detained a suspect in the killing, identified as 52-year-old Lviv resident Mykhailo Stselnikov. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has also stated that Russian special services may have been involved in the assassination. A court has extended the suspect's detention in custody, and investigators have recovered the pistol used to commit the crime. This event has sent shockwaves through Ukraine's political establishment.

Biography and Political Career

Andriy Volodymyrovych Parubiy was born on January 31, 1971, in the city of Chervonohrad, Lviv Oblast. His father, Volodymyr Parubiy, was elected as a deputy to the regional council, and his sister Olena headed the State Fiscal Service in Lviv Oblast. At 17, Andriy led the youth society 'Spadshchyna' (Heritage). He studied at the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv in the history faculty, graduating as a history teacher, and later completed postgraduate studies in the department of political science and sociology at the Lviv Polytechnic National University.

Parubiy began his career as editor of the scientific-political journal 'Orientyry' (Landmarks) from 1999 to 2002. He was married to Uliana Parubiy, and together they raised a daughter, Yaryna. In politics, Parubiy founded the Social-National Party of Ukraine (SNPU), which in 2004 was renamed the All-Ukrainian Union 'Svoboda' (Freedom). From 1994 to 1998, he served as Chairman of the Lviv City Council, and in 2002 he was elected to the Lviv Regional Council, where he became deputy chairman.

Andriy Parubiy was also an active participant in the 2004 Orange Revolution, serving as commandant of the Ukrainian House in Kyiv and receiving the commemorative badge 'Distinguished Participant of the Orange Revolution.' In 2007, he was elected to the Verkhovna Rada of the 6th convocation from the 'Our Ukraine–People's Self-Defense Bloc.' In February 2012, Parubiy left the 'Our Ukraine' party and on June 6, 2012, joined the 'Front for Change' party. He was also a People's Deputy of Ukraine of the 7th convocation from the All-Ukrainian Union 'Fatherland.'

During the Euromaidan protests (November 2013–2014), Andriy Parubiy was the commandant and head of the Maidan Self-Defense units. On March 17, 2014, he resigned his parliamentary powers, and on February 27, 2014, he assumed the position of Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (NSDC). Parubiy resigned from this post on August 7, 2014. On April 14, 2016, he became the Chairman (Speaker) of the Verkhovna Rada. In 2019, he was elected as a deputy of the 9th convocation from the 'European Solidarity' party.

On October 1, 2025, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed decrees posthumously awarding Andriy Parubiy the title of Hero of Ukraine. His life and work left a significant mark on Ukraine's political landscape.

The murder of Andriy Parubiy was a shocking event for Ukrainian society, given his substantial contribution to the country's political history.
