Drone Strikes Target Energy Infrastructure in Ukraine

According to Главком: In a series of nighttime attacks, Ukrainian drones have struck key energy facilities in Russian-occupied territories, causing widespread blackouts. On the night of April 4, 2024, drones hit the occupied part of Zaporizhzhia region, including the city of Melitopol, where explosions were heard. The strike targeted the 330 kV Melitopol substation, plunging the city into darkness.

These strikes are part of a broader Ukrainian strategy to disrupt Russian military logistics and administrative control. Two nights earlier, on April 2, a mass drone attack left occupied Crimea without power. The first wave began around 5:30 PM, with a second wave recorded after 8:45 PM. Numerous explosions were reported in the northern part of the peninsula and near the Tavria Thermal Power Plant in the Simferopol district.

Blackouts Hit Mariupol and Donetsk Region

Earlier in the year, on the night of January 13, a blackout occurred in the temporarily occupied city of Mariupol following a drone attack. A fire broke out in the area of Donetska Highway, likely ignited by a substation in the Kalmiuskyi district. It is probable that the attack also hit Russian military bases at the Illich Iron and Steel Works. Power outages resulting from such attacks are now being observed in many districts of occupied Donetsk region.

These coordinated strikes on energy infrastructure underscore the protracted nature of the conflict and its severe impact on civilian life in occupied areas. The resulting power cuts significantly complicate daily life for local residents, affecting their safety and well-being, while also challenging the stability of the occupation authorities. This emerging tactic of targeting energy grids represents a significant shift in the resistance, causing concern in military and political circles on both sides of the conflict.

As the situation in Ukraine continues to evolve, recent drone strikes have specifically targeted energy infrastructure in the Russian-occupied Donetsk region, further complicating the power supply issues faced by local residents. These coordinated efforts not only aim to disrupt military logistics but also highlight the ongoing challenges for civilians living under occupation.
