Drone Strikes Target Russian-Occupied Donetsk Region, Disrupting Energy Infrastructure
Drone Attacks on Occupied Territories
According to Главком: Multiple drone attacks struck the Russian-occupied parts of Ukraine's Donetsk region in January and March of this year, damaging infrastructure, causing fires, and triggering power outages. On March 10, drones targeted the occupied city of Makiivka, resulting in several powerful explosions. A local oil depot was hit, and an attack in Donetsk city itself caused a fire. These strikes are part of a broader pattern of targeting logistical and energy facilities behind the front lines. Earlier, on January 18, a series of explosions rocked the temporarily occupied territories of Donetsk Oblast, with the primary focus being energy infrastructure. Power supply issues were reported in Donetsk's Kirovskyi and Kuibyshevskyi districts. Another wave of drone attacks on January 14 also hit these areas, specifically targeting electrical substations.
Impact of Attacks on Civilian Population
The strikes have significantly affected civilians living under occupation. On January 13, a blackout occurred in the temporarily occupied city of Mariupol following a UAV attack. A fire broke out in the area of Donetska Highway, likely due to damage to a substation in the Kalmiuskyi district. Reports also suggested possible strikes on Russian military bases at the Illich Iron and Steel Works plant. Local residents in Mariupol reported hearing detonations, and power problems were observed in many districts of occupied Donetsk. Russian occupation authorities themselves noted that
"a swarm of drones [was] 'over almost the entire DPR'"
.
The drone attacks on the occupied Donetsk region highlight an intensification of military activity and underscore the growing role of unmanned aerial technology in modern warfare. Strikes on energy infrastructure can create significant logistical difficulties for occupying forces, impacting both civilian life and military operations. These events emphasize the ongoing conflict's toll on the civilian population, who endure the consequences of power outages and infrastructure fires.
