Assault on the Darnytsia Combined Heat and Power Plant

According to Главком: A Russian attack on the Darnytsia Combined Heat and Power Plant (CHPP) in Kyiv has caused severe damage, further straining Ukraine's energy grid. Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal stated that the facility, dedicated solely to generating residential heating, sustained heavy destruction. This strike was part of a wider assault that also damaged power generation sites in the Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Odesa, Vinnytsia, and other regions.

Repair Timeline and Consequences

Repairing the Darnytsia CHPP will be a lengthy process, significantly impacting the district's heat supply. To restore the heating mains, forces from Ukrtransgaz are scheduled to begin work on February 4, 2026. Meanwhile, starting February 3, 2026, hourly electricity outage schedules and power restrictions for industrial consumers will be implemented across all regions of Ukraine. These attacks underscore the ongoing vulnerability of critical infrastructure during the war.

In response, ministries including the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Community and Territorial Development, alongside Kyiv authorities and both municipal and private enterprises, are actively working to restore the energy infrastructure. A crucial step, as noted by Shmyhal, involves exploring options to connect backup heating sources for buildings facing prolonged outages.

Energy workers have already enacted emergency blackout schedules and are deploying additional generators to critical areas. The occupying forces specifically targeted DTEK heat and power plants that provided heating for districts in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Dnipro. Maintaining the stability of the energy system and ensuring heat for the population remains a paramount challenge under these difficult conditions.

Restoring reliable heat and electricity will be critically important for sustaining the population during the winter months. Coordinated action from government bodies, energy companies, and local administrations will be essential to mitigate the impact and ensure system stability throughout this energy crisis.
