A vehicle from the event's support caravan veered off the road and plowed into a crowd of spectators near Gabiro, approximately 100 kilometers into the route. The Tour of Rwanda is a major international sporting event for the country, drawing large crowds to its mountain stages.
Race officials confirmed that two people were killed and six others sustained injuries of varying severity, with all injured individuals now under medical care. The crash occurred between the towns of Nyagatare and Kabarore during the 173.6 km first stage, which ran from Rukomo to Rwamagana. The stage winner was Itamar Einhorn of the NSN Cycling team; however, the victory celebrations were canceled out of respect following the tragic incident.
Investigation and Safety Review Launched
Rwandan National Police have opened an investigation to determine the cause of the crash, focusing on why the driver lost control of the vehicle. Event organizers have pledged their commitment to ensuring public safety during the remaining stages of the race. Nelly Mukazayire, a spokesperson for the organizers, stated that 'this incident is a painful reminder of the importance of road safety.'
