Russia's Power Grid Under Strain: Blackouts in Belgorod and Leningrad Region
Power Grid Failure and Its Consequences
According to Главком: A failure in the power grid within the Vyborgsky District of Russia's Leningrad Region occurred on the night of February 8, leaving a number of settlements without electricity. This incident follows a series of power supply disruptions in the Russian city of Belgorod, where issues related to missile attacks and infrastructure damage were observed from February 5 to 7.
On the evening of February 7, Belgorod was left without power. Earlier, on the night of February 6, the city was subjected to a missile strike, resulting in a loss of electricity in part of Belgorod. According to reports, on the night of February 5, both Belgorod and Rostov-on-Don came under attack from missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles. On the night of February 5, missiles also struck Belgorod. Preliminary data from Russian sources suggests HIMARS systems may have been used in the attack. These events highlight the increasing vulnerability of civilian infrastructure in border regions during the ongoing conflict.
Infrastructure Damage and Impact on Civilians
Following the missile attack and explosions, Belgorod and the surrounding region were plunged into a blackout. In addition to the lack of electricity, the area is experiencing serious communication problems, notably in the Megafon mobile network. The regional governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov, confirmed serious damage to an infrastructure facility as a result of the attack.
Andriy Kovalenko commented on the situation, noting that the problems originated at the Luch Thermal Power Plant, and stated that the darkness in the city is a direct consequence of Putin's policies.
The power supply situation in Russia, particularly in Belgorod and the Leningrad Region, underscores the fragility of critical infrastructure in times of armed conflict. Restoring electricity and communications could take considerable time, significantly impacting the daily lives of residents. These incidents also point to potential security and stability risks for other Russian cities that may be targeted in the future.
