Key Refinery in Russia’s Krasnodar Region Hit by Drone Strikes

Drones attacked crucial oil refinery in Krasnodar Krai, Russia
Один з важливих об'єктів нафтопереробної промисловості в Краснодарському краї Росії зазнав атак безпілотників.

Strikes on the Ilsky Oil Refinery

According to Главком: Drones have targeted the Ilsky Oil Refinery, named after Shamara, located in the Krasnodar region of the Russian Federation. The attack triggered a fire at the facility. Situated in the settlement of Ilskaya within the Seversky District, the refinery lies roughly 50 kilometers from Krasnodar city and about 360 kilometers from the front lines in Ukraine. This plant serves as a critical enterprise for Russia’s Southern Federal District and plays a key role in military logistics.

Strategic Importance and Capacity

The Ilsky refinery’s primary processing units have a capacity of 6.6 million tons of crude oil per year. Its output includes:

  • gasoline
  • diesel fuel
  • fuel oil
  • liquefied gas

The facility’s proximity to the ports of Novorossiysk and Taman makes it strategically vital for supporting military needs.

This is not the first time the Ilsky refinery has come under attack. The initial strike occurred in May 2023, with subsequent incidents including a major assault in February 2025 that caused a large fire. On the night of September 7, 2025, a special operation destroyed the main asset ensuring the refinery’s operation. In 2026, drones hit the plant twice: on the night of January 1 and again on the night of February 17. The February 17, 2026 attack saw flames spread across approximately 700 square meters. Notably, the January 1, 2026 strike on the Ilsky refinery coincided with an attack on an oil depot in the Kaluga region.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that 'systematic strikes on Russia's oil refining infrastructure have already caused fuel shortages in occupied territories and significant losses for the Russian oil industry.'

This series of attacks on the Ilsky refinery underscores the importance of oil processing infrastructure in military operations and fuel supply for Russian forces. The loss of strategic assets could substantially hinder Russia’s ability to sustain its military efforts, especially as the conflict in Ukraine continues. Given the systematic nature of these strikes, further Ukrainian actions aimed at destroying critical enemy facilities are likely.

The recent drone strikes on the Ilsky Oil Refinery highlight a concerning trend affecting Russia’s energy infrastructure. This incident follows a similar attack on the Lukoil facility in Volgograd, which also resulted in significant damage. Such events not only disrupt oil production but also raise questions about the vulnerability of key energy assets in the region.
