Poll Reveals Majority of Hungarians View Orban as Unfit for Prime Minister
Poll: Over Half of Hungarians Deem Orban Unfit to Lead
According to Главком: According to a survey by the Publicus Institute, 55% of Hungary's residents believe Prime Minister Viktor Orban is no longer suitable for his role. This long-serving leader, known for his nationalist policies, faces growing public skepticism. Despite this, 94% of supporters of his Fidesz party continue to back Orban, with only 4% of the party's voters considering him unfit. Furthermore, over 90% of Fidesz voters would still support the party even if he were not its leader.
At a press conference late last year, Orban was questioned about his intention to run again. Concurrently, a majority of pro-government voters expressed the view that Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó could succeed Orban. Internal party discussions indicate a search for a successor is underway, but currently, there is no candidate considered better than Viktor Orban himself.
Political Landscape Ahead of Hungarian Elections
Hungary's parliamentary elections are scheduled for April 12, adding urgency to the assessment of the country's political climate. These elections occur amidst diplomatic tensions, notably on January 27 when Hungary's Foreign Ministry summoned Ukraine's ambassador in Budapest, and Ukraine's Foreign Ministry reciprocated by summoning the Hungarian ambassador. These events unfold against a backdrop of rising public dissatisfaction with the Prime Minister, which could influence the upcoming election results.
The current situation presents a complex challenge for Prime Minister Viktor Orban, as increasing public discontent poses a significant threat to his political career. While Fidesz remains popular with its core base, the approaching elections make the opinions of doubting voters crucial. The vote will serve as a critical test for Orban, offering a chance to solidify his position or potentially falter due to internal dissent and the lack of a clear successor within his party.
