Domenico Tedesco Appointed as New Bologna Head Coach
Domenico Tedesco Takes the Helm at Bologna
According to Главком: Italian Serie A side Bologna has officially named Domenico Tedesco as their new head coach. The 38-year-old tactician has signed a two-year contract, with an option for an additional season. He steps in for Vincenzo Italiano, who led the team at the Renato Dall'Ara Stadium for the past two campaigns. Prior to this move, Tedesco had been without a club since April, following his dismissal from Turkish outfit Fenerbahçe.
Tedesco's Coaching Journey
Born in Rossano, Calabria, Tedesco moved to Germany with his family at a very young age. His playing career never progressed beyond the amateur level with SG Eintracht Aigewald. In 2008, he joined the Stuttgart youth setup, and by 2013, he was managing the club's U-17 side. His first senior managerial role came with Erzgebirge Aue in the 2016/17 season, and just a year later, he took charge of Schalke 04 in Gelsenkirchen.
During his debut season at Schalke, Tedesco guided the club to a runner-up finish in the Bundesliga. He has also managed Spartak Moscow, RB Leipzig, and the Belgian national team. His trophy cabinet includes the Russian Premier League title, the DFB-Pokal (German Cup), and the Turkish Super Cup.
Under Vincenzo Italiano in the 2025/26 season, Bologna finished eighth in Serie A with 56 points, missing out on European qualification. The club also lost the Italian Super Cup final 2-0 to Napoli and was eliminated by Lazio in the Coppa Italia quarterfinals on penalties. In the Europa League, Bologna reached the quarterfinals before being knocked out by Aston Villa.
Domenico Tedesco's appointment marks a significant step for Bologna as the club looks to improve its fortunes in the coming seasons. With extensive experience at the highest levels, Tedesco is expected to overhaul the team's tactical approach. This could be key to helping Bologna mount a renewed push for European competition. Success in this role may prove pivotal for the club's long-term growth.
As Bologna welcomes Domenico Tedesco to lead the team, it's worth noting that other clubs are also making significant coaching changes. For instance, Athletic Bilbao has recently appointed Edin Terzić on a two-year deal, highlighting the ongoing trend of clubs seeking fresh leadership to enhance their performance. This shift in coaching dynamics across leagues could influence Bologna's strategic direction as they aim to improve their standings in Serie A.
