New Olympic Selection Rules for Wrestlers Ahead of LA 2028: Key Changes Explained
Qualification Calendar for the 2028 Olympic Games
According to Главком: United World Wrestling (UWW) has officially released the qualification schedule for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. The selection process will unfold across four stages, distributing 16 berths per weight class. The first phase kicks off at the 2027 World Championships, scheduled from September 11 to 19, where all medalists across the 18 Olympic weight categories-72 athletes in total-will secure their spots.
Breakdown of the Selection Stages
- Stage two allocates three quotas per weight division based on the UWW rankings. These rankings will be determined by performances at seven major tournaments held in 2027 and 2028. This stage will provide 54 licenses. Three ranking events are planned for 2027-in February, May-June, and July-with the final ranking competition set for January 2028.
- Stage three consists of four continental qualification tournaments, taking place in March and April 2028. Each continental event will award two quotas to the finalists in every category, adding 144 athletes to the Olympic roster.
- The fourth and final stage, the World Olympic Qualifying Tournament, runs from May 18 to 21, 2028. Only the winners in each of the 18 categories will earn their tickets to the Games.
Changes to the seeding system have also been approved: seeding status will now be assigned to a country, not an individual athlete. This rule applies exclusively to the Olympics, while all other tournaments will continue to seed wrestlers personally. For the final qualifying stage, each national team can enter only two wrestlers per style, and countries that already hold a license in a given weight class are ineligible to participate. The 2027-2028 calendar includes a series of ranking competitions designed to maintain competitiveness and prepare athletes for the Olympic stage.
The approval of this calendar signals active preparations for the Los Angeles Games. The introduction of new seeding rules could reshape team strategies in both athlete selection and training approaches.
These adjustments may also boost the growth of wrestling in nations that previously had fewer opportunities, as the qualification process becomes more open and accessible to newcomers.
As the wrestling community gears up for the upcoming Olympic Games, the 2027 European Games in Istanbul will play a crucial role in shaping the landscape of Olympic qualification. This multi-sport event will not only feature 26 sports but also serve as an opportunity for athletes to secure their spots for the Paris Olympics, adding an extra layer of excitement to the competitive calendar.
