Nyan OWE Drone Testing

According to НВ — Техно: A British attack drone, the Nyan OWE, has achieved a significant milestone with its first-ever launch from a ship. Developed by Callen-Lenz, a subsidiary of BAE Systems, the successful test took place in early July 2025 as part of the Neptune Reach exercises. These drills were jointly led by the Royal Navy, the British Army, and the Royal Air Force. The unmanned aircraft, which has a wingspan of roughly three meters, was deployed from the experimental vessel XV Patrick Blackett off England’s southern coast.

Earlier in 2025, the Nyan OWE had already undergone trials during Estonia’s Spring Storm exercises. For the latest tests, a launcher capable of accelerating the drone to speeds of up to 55 meters per second was used. Luke Pollard, the UK’s Minister for Defence Procurement and Industry, emphasized that the nation is firmly advancing toward a hybrid naval fleet, with cutting-edge drone systems like the Nyan OWE set to become a core component of future Royal Navy operations.

Future Prospects for Drone Development

Matt Foster, CEO of Callen-Lenz, highlighted that the Nyan platform has already proven its effectiveness in ground operations. He stressed that the drone has now also successfully demonstrated its value in a maritime setting, marking another milestone for the platform and showcasing the close collaboration between the armed forces and industry. Additional trials for the drone are scheduled aboard the HMS Queen Elizabeth, signaling continued progress and the integration of new technologies into UK military operations.

The successful tests of the Nyan OWE underscore the growing role of drones in the British armed forces’ strategy as they seek to adapt to new security challenges. The integration of such technologies could significantly reshape naval combat tactics, offering greater flexibility and efficiency.
