Vegetable Prices Surge in Ukraine, with Cucumbers and Peppers Hit Hard

Vegetable prices: cucumbers and peppers
Ціни на овочі в Україні стрімко зростають, зокрема огірки та перці зазнають значних змін.

Sharp Increase in Ukrainian Vegetable Prices

According to Главком: Last week saw a significant price hike for a range of vegetables in Ukraine. The affected produce includes:

  • Cucumbers
  • Chinese cabbage
  • Broccoli
  • Sweet and hot peppers
  • Beetroot
  • Green onions
  • Apples

In a contrasting market trend, the price of grapes fell noticeably.

Price Changes for Specific Produce

Cucumber prices jumped from 120-130 UAH to 140-170 UAH per kilogram. The domestic cucumber supply is currently dominated by imports from Turkey, a traditional key supplier of greenhouse vegetables during the winter months. Chinese cabbage rose from 22-25 UAH to 25-30 UAH per kilogram, while broccoli became cheaper, dropping from 190-210 UAH to 160-170 UAH per kilogram.

Sweet pepper also saw an increase, rising from 145-160 UAH to 180-200 UAH per kilogram. Hot pepper became more expensive, climbing from 100-180 UAH to 190-210 UAH per kilogram. Beetroot remained stable at 7-10 UAH per kilogram, with a slight fluctuation between 7 and 9 UAH. Conversely, green onion prices rose to 340-360 UAH per kilogram, up from a previous range of 250-350 UAH. Apple prices also increased from 15-35 UAH to 30-45 UAH per kilogram. Meanwhile, grapes became cheaper, falling to 60-170 UAH per kilogram from a previous price of 140-180 UAH.

This surge in vegetable prices indicates a market shift that could impact household spending on food.

The price increases are likely tied to seasonal fluctuations, changes in import patterns, and domestic demand. Given that most vegetables are currently imported, factors like currency exchange rates and logistical costs could drive prices even higher. This trend is a common challenge for economies heavily reliant on food imports during the off-season. Consumers should be prepared for potential changes in their grocery bills, especially amid broader economic uncertainty.
