Denys Volodymyrovych Sichynskyi
According to Велика українська енциклопедія: Denys Volodymyrovych Sichynskyi (1865–1909) was a prominent Ukrainian composer, choral conductor, music educator, and cultural activist, best known for composing the music to the march song «Ne Pora,» with lyrics by Ivan Franko. This piece rose to become one of the most widely acclaimed Ukrainian anthems during the early 1900s. He was born on October 2, 1865, in the village of Klyuvyntsi, located in the Ternopil district of present-day Ukraine.
Orphaned at a young age, Sichynskyi's father had worked as a teacher and financial manager on a noble estate. The family moved frequently in search of employment. Denys received his early education in Stanislaviv (now Ivano-Frankivsk) before attending the Ternopil Classical Gymnasium from 1879 to 1887, where he studied music under L. Levytskyi. Additionally, between 1886 and 1887, he took private lessons at no cost from V. Vsheliachynskyi. Sichynskyi passed away on May 26, 1909, in Stanislaviv, leaving a lasting legacy in Ukraine’s musical and cultural history.
