Ukraine and Romania have agreed on a joint infrastructure project to develop border transportation along the route "Porubne - Siret". It will be implemented with funding from the European Union under the SAFE mechanism, and decisions on both sides of the border will be synchronized by a separate protocol. This is reported by the Ministry of Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine.

The project includes the construction of a high-speed road from Suceava to Siret on Romanian territory with direct access to the Ukrainian border and the modernization of access infrastructure from the Ukrainian side towards Chernivtsi.

The "Porubne - Siret" road: what will change on the Ukrainian side

A key element of the initiative is the development of the Ukrainian section of the road, as it determines the throughput of the "Porubne - Siret" border checkpoint. According to the Deputy Minister of Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine, Serhiy Derkach, the synchronization of infrastructure solutions will eliminate "bottlenecks" and turn the border into an efficient connection point.

The project covers:

  • expansion of the Ukrainian section of the road from the border towards Chernivtsi to two lanes in each direction;

  • synchronization of access and logistics solutions with the new high-speed section Suceava - Siret (A7) in Romania;

  • preparation of infrastructure for increased traffic flows after the construction is completed.

Infrastructure at the border with Romania: expected effect

The implementation of the project is expected to ensure faster and safer transport movement, as well as enhance the integration of the Ukrainian transport network with the European one. Simultaneously, work has already begun on expanding the "Porubne" checkpoint for freight transport. By the end of the year, it is planned to increase its capacity by reconstructing and adding traffic lanes.

As a result, the border should function not as a barrier but as a convenient hub for the movement of people and goods between Ukraine and Romania.

It should be noted that Romania has joined the Purl initiative and provided 50 million euros for American weapons for Ukraine.
