According to Главком: During January and February 2026, Ukraine recorded 2,652 road accidents involving casualties. These incidents resulted in 331 fatalities and injuries to 3,432 people. Despite this grim toll, Oleksiy Biloshitsky noted that the accident rate for this period actually fell by 10-14% compared to the same timeframe in 2025. This decline suggests that recent safety initiatives are beginning to have a positive effect.

Measures to Reduce Accidents

To combat dangerous driving, 377 automated cameras are currently operational across Ukraine, primarily detecting speeding violations and illegal use of public transport lanes. Oleksiy Biloshitsky explained that

"Most of them record violations of established speed limits. However, there are also cameras that detect illegal use of public transport lanes-in Kyiv, Lviv, and Bila Tserkva."

This network is part of a broader government effort to enforce traffic laws more rigorously.

An additional 37 automated violation detection systems became operational on March 6, which is expected to further reduce accident rates. As of publication, Ukrainian authorities have issued 2,009,913 traffic fines, a 6% increase from the end of 2024. Since the onset of the full-scale war, the number of unpaid fines has surged by 43%, highlighting a significant enforcement challenge amidst the ongoing conflict.

In a related development underscoring the severity of road safety issues, the Rivne Regional Prosecutor's Office has announced charges against two officials concerning a fatal 2023 crash. That accident killed three women and caused a pregnant passenger to lose her child. This tragic case illustrates the human cost of traffic negligence and the critical need for continued safety improvements.

The 10-14% reduction in accidents compared to last year is a positive indicator that the implemented measures are working. The installation of new automated cameras and the active pursuit of traffic violators are likely to contribute to further improvements on Ukraine's roads. However, the sharp rise in unpaid fines points to the necessity for a more robust approach to ensuring compliance with traffic rules, especially under the strains of war and economic hardship.
