Forecast for Rising Food Prices in Ukraine

According to ХВИЛЯ: Food prices in Ukraine are expected to climb, according to expert Larysa Huk. She predicts that a kilogram of quality bread could reach 150 UAH, while prices for certain cereals like rice and buckwheat are also set to increase. Buckwheat has already risen from 37 to 40 UAH per kilogram, and budget rice currently costs 44 UAH per kilogram. Overall, cereal prices could see a near-term jump of around 10%.

In addition, flour prices may rise by 10-15% over the course of the year. Sugar, however, has remained stable at 26-28 UAH per kilogram. The price for a 850-gram bottle of sunflower oil starts at 61 UAH, whereas at the beginning of 2025, a similar bottle cost about 50 UAH. Ukraine's export of sunflower oil generated $5.2 billion USD, highlighting significant global demand for this staple. These price pressures come as Ukraine's economy continues to adapt to the challenges of wartime.

Trends in the Food Market

Reflecting the broader trend of increasing costs, buckwheat baguettes (300g) now cost between 45 and 51 UAH. Given these factors, consumers should prepare for further changes in the cost of basic goods in the near future.

The rise in food prices could significantly impact household welfare, particularly amid ongoing economic instability. Expert forecasts pointing to higher prices suggest a need for consumers to adapt their shopping habits, as increased costs for staples may reduce purchasing power. The stability of sugar prices, however, may offer some relief for budget-conscious households navigating the broader inflationary trend.
