European Union Credit Support for Ukraine

According to ХВИЛЯ: The Council of the European Union has adopted two key regulations, paving the way for Ukraine to receive up to €90 billion in credit support for the 2026-2027 period. This decision, made on February 24, 2026, could see the first tranche of funds disbursed as early as April 2026. This substantial financial package underscores the EU's continued commitment to Ukraine's stability amidst ongoing conflict.

The signing ceremony followed the regulations' approval, with European Parliament President Roberta Metsola and Cypriot Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos in attendance. The adopted documents enable the necessary technical work to begin, a crucial step for implementing the financial aid. However, Hungary is blocking the third element of the package-amendments to the EU's 2021-2027 long-term budget-by refusing to vote on the changes.

The Significance of the Support for Ukraine

'I have just signed, on behalf of the European Parliament, the €90 billion loan to support Ukraine. This is to keep essential public services running, maintain Ukraine's strong defense capabilities, and secure Ukraine's future in Europe.' - Roberta Metsola

Additionally, Cypriot representative Marilena Raouna stressed the importance of supporting Ukraine as humanitarian needs escalate and Russian attacks on critical infrastructure intensify.

Valdis Dombrovskis also noted that the adopted documents allow the required technical preparations to commence immediately. This will ensure the possibility of disbursing the first tranche of the planned €90 billion to Ukraine in April 2026, even if Hungary's blockade persists. The EU's move demonstrates a strategic effort to provide predictable, long-term funding for Ukraine's recovery and resilience.

This EU decision signals the continuation of support for Ukraine within the context of the protracted war and economic instability. Providing such significant funds is not only financial assistance but also a powerful signal of international solidarity with the Ukrainian people. Despite obstacles from Hungary, the EU is demonstrating its readiness to support Ukraine in its efforts toward recovery and integration into European structures.
