IRIS2 and GOVSATCOM Satellite Systems Go Live

According to Главком: The European Union has activated the first segment of its own secure satellite communications network, IRIS2 and GOVSATCOM. This €10.6 billion project is designed to provide a European-controlled alternative to popular systems like Starlink and reduce the bloc's strategic reliance on the United States. Initial components began test operations last week. The system is intended for use by EU governments and military forces, marking a significant step toward technological sovereignty. This move comes amid growing global competition in space-based infrastructure.

According to EU Commissioner for Defence and Space, Andrius Kubilius, member states can now begin utilizing this secure, encrypted satellite communications service. The system is entirely European-built, managed, and controlled by EU nations. Once fully deployed, the IRIS2 constellation will consist of 290 satellites across multiple orbits, with full operational capability expected by 2030.

NATO Cooperation and Ukraine's Request

Ukraine has already formally requested access to the new satellite network. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, while welcoming the EU initiative, emphasized the continued importance of transatlantic cooperation, stating:

"Europe cannot fully ensure its security without the involvement of the United States" – Mark Rutte.

The satellites for the new system are being supplied by a consortium of European companies, including SES, Eutelsat, and Hispasat.

The launch of IRIS2 and GOVSATCOM represents a major strategic investment by the European Union to bolster its security and technological independence. This initiative could reshape the geopolitical landscape of space technology by providing a sovereign European capability. The cooperation with NATO and Ukraine's request for access demonstrate the system's potential role in broader international security frameworks beyond the EU's borders.
