Negotiations of European leaders before the Trump-Putin meeting
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced a series of virtual negotiations among European leaders on August 13, dedicated to preparing for the upcoming meeting between US President Donald Trump and the Russian dictator Putin.
As he reported on social media X, participants will discuss possible pressure tools on Russia, prospects for peace negotiations, territorial claims, and security guarantees.
Among the participants will be US President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, as well as the leaders of Finland, France, Great Britain, Italy, Poland, and Ukraine, along with the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Council, and the NATO Secretary General.
According to media reports, the negotiations will start at 14:00 with the participation of European country leaders and the NATO Secretary General, after which there will be a separate meeting with the US President and Vice President, which will also include European leaders and Ukrainian President Zelensky.
The final stage of negotiations in the 'coalition of the determined' format, chaired by Germany, Great Britain, and France, will begin at 16:30.
The preparation for the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin depends on the outcomes of the virtual negotiations among European leaders. Participants will discuss possible strategies for pressuring Russia, prospects for diplomatic solutions, and security guarantees in the region.
