4.2 million Ukrainians work in the EU: how it affects the economy of Ukraine
According to hvylya.net: Ukrainians who have left the country due to the war are helping to develop the economies of EU countries, but this leads to the loss of human capital in Ukraine. More than 4.2 million Ukrainians have temporary protection status in the EU and actively work and pay taxes. For example, the contribution of Ukrainians to the GDP growth of Poland was 2.7% in 2024.
Although forced migrants have higher education, they often work in less skilled positions abroad due to language barriers and diploma recognition issues. Their salaries are lower than those of local workers, but their contribution to the economy is noticeable.
Existing problems and threats to Ukraine
At the same time, only 43% of migrants consider the possibility of returning to Ukraine, which may lead to losses for the Ukrainian economy. The situation exacerbates problems in Ukraine, from labor shortages to a demographic crisis. It is important to create conditions to encourage people to return to the country, in particular by providing affordable housing, jobs, and restoring the economy.
