G7 Tightens Sanctions on Russia and Reaffirms Support for Ukraine
Key Outcomes from the G7 Summit in Évian-les-Bains
According to ХВИЛЯ: The G7 summit in Évian-les-Bains, France, concluded with major decisions and strong statements from participating leaders. Unlike the previous year’s meeting in Canada, where he left after the first evening, U.S. President Donald Trump stayed for all three days. French President Emmanuel Macron, the summit host, arranged a private dinner for Trump at the Palace of Versailles on June 17, where an agreement with Iran was signed. The leaders of the seven nations called this deal a breakthrough.
New Sanctions and Steadfast Support for Ukraine
The G7 pledged unwavering support for Ukraine and promised to tighten sanctions against Russia, particularly in the oil and gas sector. Discussions included new air defense systems, long-range strike capabilities, and the possibility of licensed allied weapons production. According to The Economist, the Iran deal could reduce Russia’s monthly oil windfall by $5 to $6 billion.
On June 18, Ukrainian drones struck an oil refinery on Moscow’s southeastern outskirts. In response, informal talks with Russia have resumed, with a two-phase ceasefire under consideration. The first phase would limit combat to a 50–70 km zone on both sides of the front line, followed by a broader agreement. Russia insists on the Anchorage formula, which would legally recognize its occupation of Donbas and Crimea.
Ukrainian diplomat Lana Zerkal noted: 'Putin once tried to pretend the war was far away. He can’t do that when Russians see the smoke with their own eyes.'
It is worth noting that contacts between Kyiv and the Trump team occur daily. U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll stated that Ukrainian forces’ combat interoperability surpasses that of the U.S. military, while Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth acknowledged that America has learned a great deal from Ukrainian drone operations.
Overall, the G7 summit in Évian-les-Bains signals a new tone in relations with the United States, particularly regarding support for Ukraine and pressure on Russia.
The decisions made at the G7 summit highlight growing international backing for Ukraine amid its conflict with Russia. Tightening sanctions against Russia is a key step in curbing its aggression. Meanwhile, the resumption of informal talks between Kyiv and Moscow underscores a desire for peaceful resolution, even under difficult conditions tied to Ukraine’s territorial integrity. These developments could significantly shape the region’s future trajectory.
