According to НВ — Техно: Over the past four decades, satellite imagery and field measurements have revealed a dramatic rise in instability among Himalayan rivers due to climate change. A team of researchers from Beijing and Sichuan published findings in the May issue of Science, documenting a sharp increase in river channel migration and the formation of new bends. Between 1980 and 2020, the rate of channel shifting jumped by one-third, while the number of free-flowing meanders nearly doubled.

The Himalayan mountain range is warming twice as fast as the global average, a key driver of these transformations. Melting glaciers are dumping fresh sediment into riverbeds, while previously frozen soils that stabilized riverbanks have thawed and begun to slide into the water. Dr. Zhongpen Han noted that

“the upper reaches of the High Himalayas have become a testing ground where warming and river dynamics collide most intensely, allowing scientists to observe how meandering rivers undergo morphological changes”

These shifts pose serious threats to infrastructure and demand a fresh approach to planning. Professor Chenshan Wang emphasized that

“for the billions of people who rely on these waters, accelerating river dynamics bring new safety challenges: flood risks are rising, riverside infrastructure is increasingly vulnerable, and predicting where a river will flow a decade from now has become impossible”
