Hantavirus Infection in Ukraine

According to Главком: Each year, Ukraine reports dozens of hantavirus infections. The virus spreads from rodents to humans through dust, contaminated surfaces, or food tainted by animal droppings. To reduce the risk of infection, experts recommend wet cleaning with antiseptics and wearing gloves while cleaning.

Pathogenic hantaviruses cause two main types of illness:

  • hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, which is common in Europe and Asia, including Ukraine;
  • hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, which is typical in the Western Hemisphere.

The Andes virus variant can be transmitted between humans, but this is rare and only occurs during prolonged, close contact.

A recent hantavirus outbreak was detected among tourists on the MV Hondius cruise ship. According to Mykola Hanich, spokesperson for the Public Health Center,

“Ukraine records dozens of hantavirus infections annually, but this hantavirus is only transmitted from rodents to humans.”

Following the outbreak in neighboring Poland, sanitary monitoring has been introduced for a contact person. On board the MV Hondius, five Ukrainians show no signs of infection and are in satisfactory condition. Ukrainian diplomats in the Netherlands and Malaysia are monitoring the situation.

Mykola Hanich also noted:

“If you suspect potential contact-such as in old buildings, utility rooms, or if you’ve noticed rodents at home-avoid sweeping or stirring up dust. Instead, perform wet cleaning. If surfaces may have been exposed to rodents, clean them with antiseptics and never touch them with bare hands.”

Prevention and Recommendations

The hantavirus outbreak highlights the critical importance of preventive measures against this disease. Since hantavirus spreads through contact with rodents, especially in rural areas or older buildings, following expert advice is essential to lower infection risks. Increased attention to cleaning and disinfection can significantly reduce the chances of transmission.

The recent outbreak on the MV Hondius highlights the ongoing risks associated with hantavirus. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of understanding how these infections can spread, particularly among travelers.
