According to Главком: A Russian drone struck the Kharkiv Art Museum in the early hours of June 10, igniting a blaze. Firefighters responded quickly and extinguished the flames, preventing further damage.
City Under Fire: Waves of Drone Assaults
On June 9, the Russian military launched multiple waves of attack drones against Kharkiv. These strikes left five people injured, including a child. Explosions were reported in at least five districts of the city, notably Nemyshlyanskyi and Industrialnyi. Residential areas were hit, sparking fires and damaging homes and vehicles. By 10:29 PM on June 9, authorities confirmed that five individuals had sustained physical injuries or psychological trauma.
Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov personally joined the rescue operation, carrying paintings to safety in bomb shelters. A spring audit of secure storage facilities had been conducted by the Ministry of Culture and relevant foundations, highlighting a proactive approach to safeguarding cultural assets. As of early May, Ukraine had documented:
- 1,783 damaged cultural landmarks
- 2,540 destroyed cultural infrastructure sites
To bolster protection of cultural sites, draft law No. 14391 has been introduced in Ukraine.
This incident underscores the critical need to preserve cultural heritage amid ongoing conflict. Reflecting the scale of destruction, the Ministry of Culture continues to implement measures aimed at protecting cultural treasures, a priority that has grown urgent given the repeated attacks on civilian targets. The swift response by local authorities, particularly the mayor of Kharkiv, demonstrates a readiness to act decisively in crises-a model that could inspire other Ukrainian cities.
The ongoing conflict has not only put Kharkiv's cultural heritage at risk but has also affected other significant sites across Ukraine. For instance, recent attacks have targeted the Chernobyl Museum and other landmarks in Kyiv, resulting in substantial damage. Such incidents highlight the urgent need for protective measures for cultural institutions throughout the country.
